Why do we learn?

Why do we sacrifice?

I remain caught between opposing sides of serving a higher purpose. To be a martyr for the oppressed, to dedicate and possibly sacrifice oneself in every sense is a virtuous and noble cause, yet it begs the question of why we perceive it to be such.

Ethics are a muddy business.

I suppose there is a synthesis between the two, philosophizing about meaning in order to serve a higher purpose, but that seems to bring about its own paradox, glossing over the original question.

The Pandora’s Box that is blown open through pondering what it means to exist brings up the validity of an age-old “proverb” with a unique twist brought on by a rugged pursuit of the existential: is ignorance by choice bliss?
