A referendum begins in Venice and the surrounding region on whether to become independent from Italy.

Keith Wayne Brown‘s insight:

There are quite a few regions around the globe where citizens are discussing true regional autonomy. The more global we become, the more local we become.

This is a bit fascinating… “We” are a global society, and is it possible that smaller countries/populations now feel more empowered knowing that they do not need to rely on their “big brothers” anymore giving them courage to make their global desire for independence? Beautiful stuff.

it is very interesting, isn’t it? This is, in one sense, what gives me pause about things like the Crimea situation where the powers-that-be seem to be moving things backward, in a sense.

Actually, when I think about things in terms of Deleuze’s concept of the Society of Control or Latouche’s writings of Westernization & Degrowth or even Appadurai’s notions on globalization, the trend should be moving toward greater autonomy on the local level. So we would expect to see those who had profited most from Disciplinary society (like the Cold War powers and some monopolies) not appreciating these calls for “glocal” autonomy.
