No one but you is forcing you to accept low-paid adjunct work.
To summarize the piece: If you don’t like it, you are free to do something else. Market yourself differently beyond the academy. Don’t blame the graduate program for not spending any time advising you to think of other things to do outside the academy. Take charge of your life.
Actually, I think you can blame a professional MA/PhD program that does not spend at least 1/5 of its professional development seminars and workshops on options other than academia. Nobody in the Academy is ignorant of the current situation. NOBODY. Those who advise should be offering encouragement early on in the career of graduate students to be wide roaming in looking at where their opportunities may lie. .
