I find that I get more from reading Esquire, Truthout, and even some blogs than I get from watching journalism on any of the news networks.
So while I am not a great friend of the global financial news networks–CNN, MSNBC, etc–I am astounded that there are people who can find Fox News to be anything other than pure propaganda.
I loathe what Fox News tries to pass off as journalism. Completely loathe it. It flies past shallow into the realm of two dimensional caricatures.
It’s thoroughly delightful when Fox News showcases its simplistic agenda, and is exposed for its ignorant and biased one-dimensionality. After the obligatory introductory niceties, Fox interviewer Lauren Green showcases both her foolishness and defamatory intentions with her first question to famed religious scholar Reza Aslan:
Q: “You’re a Muslim, so why did you write a book about the founder of Christianity?”
A: “To be clear, I’m a scholar of religions with four degrees including one in the New Testament and fluency in Ancient Greek who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades… so, it’s not that I’m just some Muslim writing about Jesus, I am an expert with a Ph.D in the history of religions.”
Reza’s new book, Zealot, is a controversial historical study of the life of Jesus, substantiated by “100 pages of footnotes and about 1000 books.”
The exchange is representative of the intellectual asymmetry apparent throughout the interview that makes it such a treat to watch. Her argument never strays from this easily defeated noobish premise, and therefore we have the fantastic opportunity to witness a hilarious 10-minute intellectual massacre.
