Kanye West: Easy Target for the Daily Currant


I like the Daily Currant because unlike the Onion, the stuff is written just close enough to reality to make you actually buy it for a bit.

I figured Kanye actually said this stuff–he has said crap not that far away from it–until I realized the source. Still, that folks figure he would say such things just says what most people think of the guy.

My favorite line, personally, was after the interviewer asked what Kanye had done to fight racism, and Kanye says, “I’ve blazed a trail with my career… I faced mad racism when I entered this profession. I mean how many black rappers can you name that came before me? I was a pioneer. And now I’m doing the same thing in the fashion world.

“Not to say Mandela wasn’t for real. I have mad respect. I just think we need to keep things in perspective here. Anyone can be replaced. And I think I’m well on my way towards being the next great black leader. I’m already worshiped around the world. And there’s more to come.”

    There seems to lurk an irrationality element to art, but when I listen to these sort of quotes they seem THC induced; that was my problem with smoking pot is evolved me into a mental giant. And I am not sure if Kanye smokes, but he brings to mind De Niro playing Rupert Pupkin in King of Comedy.

        Could we switch words and say serendipitous?
        It has a more heighten quality than accidental.
        But as regards his qualities, I know very little about him and rappers per sey all seem to pale when one compares them to Tupac.
        But present day genius, I tend to consider Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

        Well, this provides a clearing for some real thinking. Would we mean by the serendipitous maker someone who is open to what he was not looking for? That always ready to experiment and test the limits?

        And if so, might we also need to refine what such openness is open to do? That is, should we distinguish the work of art from its topography? In this instance, songs made in popular culture.

        I get that the “medium is the message”, and with Kanye and others, the medium is not the song but popular culture itself. Music, fashion, movies, are vehicles for making popular culture.

        The distinction with Tupac and some other folks would be that their medium remains music in the landscape of popular culture. I would attribute as a most important creative force for any artist serendipity. Without it, he/she will not find that unexpected variation that allows art to continue evolving.

        So having said all that, for Kanye is what he creates serendipitous to finding a voice in pop culture or in the work of art? Possibly he is serendipitously popular and accidentally artistic. Whereas a Tupac is purposefully artistic, accidentally popular, and serendipitously redefining the medium by the message.

        Or something like that… what do you think?

        I think: pour me a drink and let me stew over it. Meanwhile, you are well within the borders of what i would’ve wrote provided i could think so clearly. You may have understood my nascent point of view better than I have done so myself. In fact, now I understand the full drift of what was contained in my question. Rendered back as a completed thought. So much of what we think is unthought. Thank you for thinking through my thought!

    Lol, I have to be honest and admit I initially thought the reports were true, it wasn’t until I did some research that I realised it was a parody.
