A short message to friends and siblings on 4th July 2023.
TRANSCRIPT
If we put decisive faith into our humanity rather than throwing ourselves blindly under “In God we trust,” the promises of the Declaration of Independence are still possible.
It doesn’t matter that it was written by a hypocrite.
It doesn’t matter that the majority of our history has never lived up to its ideal.
What matters is that the promise of independence from hereditary aristocracy (that’s wealth inequality) and naive dogmatism (that’s religious bigotry) is not denied for the sake of a small, middling, and secure life in slavery to the god Mammon.
Because make no mistake: It is that “god” Mammon and its servants Avarice and Greed which pull the strings in most financial, political, and religious institutions.
So today, on a day where we know that too many promises have been broken while others never have been attempted, I want you to say: “Get thee behind me, Mammon! Because I know in my heart that people who have profound faith in humanization and who act reflectively, thoughtfully, responsively to the world, [WE] can send you back to hell with your children and free our people.
This is the vocation of humanization.
This is the promise of the Declaration of Independence.
