I call the time between first and second sleep the Night Vigil, following the old monastic traditions.
For me, Night Vigil begins with an examination of conscience:
Oh thou Encompassing, thou All, thou One.
How can I give myself over to thee without examining who I was this day?
Open my heart to see what I have done and what I have failed to do.
Give me clarity to take responsibility for who I am,
And having taken myself up, to give my ownmost being over to Thee
so that all is done through thee, with thee, in thee.
In this Vigil in the depth of Night, by this simple letting-go:
All flows as one Love. Amen
