Burned, Bombed, Beaten

Education is under attack worldwide. The report issued by the  United Nations speaks to conditions in the most physically violent locales around the globe. We should pay close heed to these. Because they are the physical counterpart of the psychosocial warfare being waged on instructors in places like the United States.

From neo-conservative politicians who seek to dictate what can be put in textbooks to neo-progressives who stifle open dialog by “trigger warnings” on syllabi, manipulation of education is on the rise both for domination and profit. This includes how the Neo-Liberal education industry creates what amounts to a disposable instructional underclass (adjuncts working for minimum wage).

As we inform ourselves about how contemporary warfare is targeting schools and teachers, we should also keep an eye on what is happening at home.

…perhaps the most disturbing trend in modern warfare is the rise in attacks on educational institutions, the cradles of any country’s future.

In the most exhaustive account of the issue to date, the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) Thursday released a 250-page report detailing attacks on schools, universities, teachers, students and academics, by both state and non-state actors.

Covering the five-year period from 2009-2012, and following on the heels of less comprehensive studies put forth by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2007 and 2010, “Education Under Attack 2014” documents threats and the deliberate use of force against those involved in educational activities for “political, military, ideological, sectarian, ethnic or religious reasons.”
