For Jared

What is care of the self? Do we mean care of the I or care of the body or care of the being with an I in a body or care of the body with an eye for an I?

What is care of the self? Taking up in this passing moment the very passage of time–this time, my time, your time, our time, their time, all times, no times–selves arising and falling away with each new pass along the boundary.

What is care of the self? Having concern for that being that cannot achieve any constancy.

What is care of the self? Not care for the constant! Take care with the constant, yes! But there is no care for it–the constant is secure and careless. The constant has no cares–carefulness falls away for that which stands and waits to be found.

What is care of the self? Inconstant, inconsiderate, inhospitable–outstanding, transcending, encompassing–nothing found is nothing gained.

What is care of the self? The wisdom of insecurity… unobjectable, unnecessary, unconditional.

“Only the ennobled human being may be given freedom of spirit; to him alone does alleviation of life draw near and salve his wounds; only he may say that he lives for the sake of joy and for the sake of no further goal . . .”

–Friedrich Nietzsche, Final Aphorism from “The Wanderer and his Shadow”
in Human, All too Human
