So there has been some big discussion on diverse Star Wars boards that continues the notion that only the movies can really ever be considered cannon. This, of course, is in direct contradiction to the new story strategies coming out of LucasFilm (Disney) and the clear history of George Lucas himself considering the cartoons to be “official.”
I am especially reminded of a discussion I had online with a few fans who were very adamant that Abrams and other directors would not allow the “silly cartoons” to bind them in what they would put into the films.
Of course we all know that it is the Living, Encompassing Force that binds all things… and the LucasFilm Story Group that binds all stories. 😛
So to those folks who want to see only films as the “real deal”, I say once again, there is a new way of doing things.
The new canon began on screen with the Star Wars Rebels animated television series and in print with the novel A New Dawn. Under the direction of theLucasfilm Story Group, all elements of Star Wars canon now operate in a unified and collaborative storytelling setting.
The stories between big and small screen, novels and comic books, all of them are being worked together to make for a fuller overarching narrative (mythology).
Case in point: the mid-season trailer for Star Wars Rebels. Wow. Does it include a little bit of everything: force visions of Yoda, Darth Maul, the obvious genesis of the First Order and the Knights of Ren, Princess Leia, more revelations on the struggles of Anakin’s soul even as he takes on more and more the identity of Darth Vader.
Okay. I’ll stop. You just watch this…
